Is the Redmi N3 a good choice for those who want custom stuff?

I've been looking...for over a year now for a replacement to my OPO... I need more space and the phone is getting...weird as she ages. Anyway...

I tried searching a bit, but I wasn't sure how to search for this kind of question... However if someone has asked something similar please let me know. haha

Basically...

1. Is the device decently well supported? I seem some roms and stuff, but still. Just want to be sure.
2. How is the Snapdragon 650 compared to an older SD 801? Faster? Slower?
3. Will I have to jump through any insane hoops to get this thing unlocked and rooted? Or is it similar to a normal device?

I've never owned a Xiaomi device before...so I am just worried about getting a device that isn't generally sold in the west. (And I'm not saying anything negative about them, I am just nervous).
