What Happens to Gift if We Return Device?

I got a 256GB card and am CONTEMPLATING returning the Note 7 if the LG V20 is as good as it seems to be (larger battery and phenomenal DAC are the main reasons I am considering it). Anyway, I assume we aren't going to have to return the gift, right? How would Samsung even know since this is being done through Verizon (in my case)? Am I safe to assume I can keep it?
