Blackberry Wants to Use Qualcomm Hardware in Cars, Virtual Cockpits, and Infotainment Systems

Qualcomm supplies chips to various Android phone makers but has also recently partnered up with Microsoft to bring Windows to Qualcomm powered laptops. Now, Blackberry wants to team up with Qualcomm and bring their hardware to self-driving cars.

The QNX Hypervisor 2.0 is a specialized system developed by Blackberry which can run on the Snapdragon 820Am processor. This is a processor specifically developed by Qualcomm for autonomous vehicles. It has all of the features of the Snapdragon 820, but is aimed directly at the automotive market rather than the handheld device market. This was able to be used by car manufacturers to decrease costs, as all of the complex car systems required could be placed on the same platform.

The QNX Hypervisor 2.0 platform also allows car makers to have peace of mind when developing for cars, as critical and non-critical functions can be kept apart via partitioning. This means failure of a non-critical part ensures that the car will still work safely, without putting the driver or other drivers at risk by affecting a critical part of the system.

The Snapdragon 820Am has high processing power inside of infotainment systems, being capable of so much more than your average car. It's not just for infotainment either as it comes with the same location services and artificial intelligence capabilities of your mobile phone. It also supports multiple OSes, something you would expect given Qualcomm is aiming for this to run in cars made by various car manufacturers who may have their own operating systems, just like Blackberry.

Qualcomm also said that they are working in tandem with Blackberry to bring their hardware to virtual cockpits, electronic control gateways, telematics including eCall and Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology, and digital instrument clusters. We can expect to see the results of this partnership in the coming years, with Blackberry and Qualcomm powered cars in the future.
